John Lilly and Jay T Shirley collaboratively invented the isolation tank in 1954. In 1961, they were still researching together (according to the linked article). Why is so little said/available about Jay Shirley in regards to the floatation tank compared to JCL? Any pics of Jay Shirley?

I posed this question and then did research. Chatgpt helped me do research greatly. A very informative article shed much light on this subject:

  1. First of all, his name is more commonly spelled as Shurley not Shirley. Full name: Jay Talmage Shurley. (deceased Feb 24, 2004).
  2. Lilly visited Donald Hebb at McGill University and got some ideas about Isolation there
  3. Apparently Jay Shurley joined Lilly as an assistant in 1956, not 1954.
  4. Lilly and Shurley both left NIMH and went in different directions. They were only at NIMH together for about 1 year. Even after separating, they published some critical papers as late as 1961.
  5. Shurley went on to spend 15 years at U Oklahoma researching psychotherapeutic uses of the tank
